Maria Sibylla Merian

Maria Sibylla Merian was born in 1647 in Frankfurt and died 1717 in Amsterdam. From 1699 to 1701 she traveled through Surinam in South America and drew fascinating pictures of exotic butterflies, fruits and plants. After her return to Nürnberg she married the painter J.A. Graff and engraved her pictures on copper plates for the illustration of entomological and botanical books.
